The 18th issue of the magazine offers several interesting reports on application areas in which GERSTEL instruments and -systems are being used as chemical analysis tools of choice: Food safety, environmental, workplace safety, metabolomics, as well as forensic dating services. Reassuringly, more monitoring of air, water, food, and consumer products than ever before is going on. And GERSTEL is glad to lend a helping hand: A dual tower MPS automates the determination of 3-MCPD and glycidol in edible oils, toxic food contaminants that can be generated during the refining process. A comprehensive SBSE method has been developed for the determination of around 100 contaminants in surface water with suspended particulate following the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). On the environmental side, we also paid a visit to the DowDuPont Ecology Lab in Stade, Germany. We wanted to find out how the Stade laboratory manages to be a center of excellence for air monitoring and more within the worldwide DowDuPont network. GERSTEL technology is being put to good use with excellent results, as it turns out. Finally a team of Italian Researchers have developed new methods for dating of gunshot residue (GSR). This helps to determine whether and when a firearm has been fired to help solve crimes on a solid scientific basis. And GERSTEL automation is found in many publications in the field of metabolomics as well, helping to develop better foods and to understand the health implications of diet in a major EU study involving 25,000 participants.
